Sony Ericsson Day 3

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Quick recap of some of yesterday’s highlights: American Men certainly had a day to remember, as Spadea, Querrey, Kim and Delic all moved on (althought Spadea defeated fellow American Robby Ginepri). It is not secret Spadea loves this tournament, as he is a bit of a hometown favorite, as he grew up about an hour north of Miami. Both Venus Williams and Ashley Harkleroad advanced on the Women’s side. Here are the rest of the results: (more…)

Sony Ericsson Day 2

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

UPDATE**** Well its 4pm and matches have finally begun, hopefully the rain will hold off. According the the always accurate weather channel, should really start to clear tomorrow early afternoon. So no tennis results to report, but thought this article might interest readers. Seems I was not the only one frustrated with the round robin.

11 am – Some good action yesterday, interrupted every now and then by rain, that saw crowd favortie Gustavo Kuerten fall 2 and 2 to Raemon Sluiter in Stadium Court during the featured night match. Here are the rest of the results: (more…)

Sony Ericsson Preview

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Today, on the first day of Spring, it is about 20 degrees fahrenheit in Stowe, VT – home of Grand Slam Tennis Tours. Fortunately for me, I am writing from our Sponsor Booth at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida, where first round action is starting up. Today’s preview isn’t so much about the tennis itself, but more about changes that I have noticed in the tournament itself. With new sponsor Sony Ericsson on board (taking over for Nasdaq-100, who had taken over from Ericsson), the tournament seems to be more fan friendly than ever before. Right across from our booth is the fast serve competition, a staple for all tournaments, but next to that is a Beach Tennis setup that is open for free play (which I intend on using in about 15 mintues). Also, they have setup up FIVE Fashion Shows throughout the week; and while that is not exactly my cup of tea (I swear I have never watched an Episode of America’s Next Top Model) the addition of the shows is definitely a great way to get some more fans through the gate. There is also a plethora of food options, ranging from typical burger/fries fare to sushi to a make your own salad bar. You can also get pitcher’s of Mojitos for a mere $35, not sure if I can expense that or not… (more…)

Second Hand Account from the Pacific Life Open

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

I wish I could tell you I was writing from poolside from the La Quinta Resort and Club, but I would be lying. Instead I am coming to you live from my favorite time of year in Vermont, where the snow begins to melt and everything is covered in mud!

I could probably write an entire post on Roger Federer’s loss to Guillermo Canas, but I’m going to resist temptation and try to sum it up in one statement: The greatest player of all time didn’t play his best tennis, didn’t appear to be 100% healthy, and lost to a top 10 caliber player who is on a mission to vault himself back into the upper echelon of Men’s tennis after a steroid suspenion. End of story. (more…)

At least the ATP understands the Round Robin Format

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

This is a follow up to both my blog on James Blake, and the Round Robin Format.  Clearly, the ATP has failed, thus far at least, in successfully implementing the new format into the mainstream.  After one mishap in Buenos Aires, another signifcant problem occurred yesterday in Las Vegas.  In order to advance, James Blake need to defeat Juan Martin del Porto in straight sets, surrendering five games or less.  He in fact, accomplished that by winning 6-3, 3-1 when del Porto defaulted.  Blake was thus told he would advance to the quarterfinal knockout stage.  However, after more thought, it was decided that since it was not a completed match, del Porto would have nothing to do with the tiebreaker, therefore the tiebreaker was between Blake and Korolev, who defeated Blake earlier and therefore he moved onto the quarters.  Reading back on this paragraph even confused me, so for a more detailed explanation click here.
