Fed Cup is coming to Stowe…
Announced by the USTA on Tuesday, the semifinal Fed Cup by BNP Paribas USA vs. Russia in association with Grand Slam Tennis Tours, will be held at Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe, Vermont on July 14th and 15th. Working in the Grand Slam office day to day, I can tell you that this was not an easy task. It took a lot of hard work and planning by all three major entities involved.
The buzz around town has been absolutely incredible. From the moment this idea spawned a couple of months ago, it has definitely on the forefront of everyone’s mind. Stowe, although smaller than what people typically picture when they think of a venue for a major tennis event, is rich with tennis history, and the Fed Cup is a perfect way to bring tennis to the present of Stowe, and build for its future. Stowe is not a stranger to world class tennis, as it used to host the Head Tennis Classic through most of the 1980s, that featured the likes of Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl.
For those that are not too familiar with Stowe, it is pretty much the quintessential New England ski town, complete with covered bridges, bed and breakfasts, and the regions tallest ski mountain, Mount Mansfield. Personally, and I think many locals would agree with me, our town is even better in the summer. Not as many tourists overcrowd local restaurants and bars as the winter, but there are more than enough people to keep the town energized. From the town’s recreation path, to golf courses and tennis playing, to hiking, there are even more outdoor activities to enjoy during the summer months. Now, we are adding a world class tennis event to our plans, a certain way to enhance our, and your, summer.
