The injury has not affected Fish's groundstrokes. Fish, whose best Sony Ericsson Open result was a third-round appearance in 2003, believes he will return to tournament tennis next month when he will try to defend his U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships title in Houston, April 9-15. A year ago, Fish defeated Jurgen Melzer, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, to claim his first career clay-court championship in Houston.
Fish has posted a 12-5 record this season, reaching semifinals in Auckland and Memphis. He lost to Paul-Henri Mathieu, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-7(5), in the second round of Indian Wells earlier this month.
