Wimbledon, the oldest major championship in tennis, is the third of the Grand Slam tournaments on the annual tennis calendar and is considered to be the most prestigious. The nineteen courts are all composed purely of rye grass that favour serve and volley players on account of their speed and low bounce. Britons are very proud of their tournament but it is a source of national anguish and humour - no British man has won the singles event since Fred Perry in 1936, and no British woman since Virginia Wade in 1977.
